Friends, yes, you did not read that wrong šŸ‘€
Do you know why the Nicobar project is literally like playing with fire?Ā

Great Nicobar island lies right on the volatile ā€œRing of Fireā€, a region notorious for intense seismic activity and severe natural disasters. The tragic 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, in which over 2.25 Lakh people lost their lives, reminded us how vulnerable this region is. The proposed project site witnesses about 44 earthquakes every year, which could result in risking public investment in infrastructure and a high probability of oil/chemical spill, leading to loss of unparalleled biodiversity.Ā Ā

Seeing how this project is very clearly a MAJOR risk for the lives of lakhs of people. We sent a detailed letter to key decision makers in the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Authorities on 11th August, 2025, urging them to review the seismic and disaster risks of the Great Nicobar Project.

In our letter, we emphasized the serious need for:
• A thorough, independent disaster risk assessmentĀ
• Public disclosure of all seismic and geological data
• Immediate reconsideration and suspension of the project until the risks are properly evaluated and addressed.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted for the project does not sufficiently address the region’s seismic and tsunami risks.Ā

This oversight puts both the local communities and the unique ecosystems at risk. That’s why raising these concerns with authorities is so critical.

We see this letter as a crucial step in our collective effort to protect Great Nicobar’s future — its people, its forests, and its marine life. But the fight isn’t over yet, and we will keep pushing for transparency, accountability, and precaution that this project needs.Ā
